How to Contact HMRC: A Quick Reference Guide

Contacting HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) can sometimes be a challenge. Knowing which number to call can save you a lot of time and frustration. This guide provides a quick reference to the main HMRC helplines for UK businesses.

Before You Call

To make your call as smooth as possible, it is a good idea to:

  • Have your reference numbers ready. This could be your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), VAT number, PAYE reference, or Company Registration Number (CRN).
  • For Self Assessment: Your National Insurance Number (NINO). This could be your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), VAT number, PAYE reference, or Company Registration Number (CRN).
  • Check the opening hours. Most HMRC lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, but it is always best to check the GOV.UK website for the most up-to-date information.
  • Be prepared for a wait. HMRC phone lines can be very busy, especially around key deadlines. Try to call at quieter times, such as mid-morning or mid-afternoon.
